With South African coal-fired power plants currently being dismantled, growing energy transition stakes and grid reliability to be improved, South Africa faces many energy challenges.

To support the country, EDF is developing partnerships to position itself as a reference player in reliable and decarbonized energy supply. From energy efficiency activities for C&I customers to engineering services with GIBB Power, EDF keeps developing innovative services to better serve the local market.

Tailor-made offers for C&I customers

To meet a growing sustainable electricity demand, save energy and overcome grid uncertainties, Commercial & Industrial (C&I) customers are increasingly interested into self-consumption devices. Through decentralized solar systems, mostly on roofs, our customers benefit from a renewable and local energy source.

EDF is very active in this field: the Group is a 50% shareholder in EEK Ltd with several sites in operation in Kenya, and is pursuing its work on C&I customers in West and Central Africa. In addition, EDF is developing its activity in South Africa with some commissionings planned for 2022.

Energy solutions and services for smart cities

Growing urbanisation and demographic expansion expose South-African metropolis to high energy transition stakes. Through communicating meterssmart networks, public lighting as well as other innovative solutions, the Group wishes to offer its tailor-made solutions to develop local "smart cities", which will be more responsible, connected and low carbon.

A series of audits have already been carried out.

Supporting engineering

In 2018, EDF associated with the South-African group GIBB to launch GIBB Power, an engineering firm specialised in technical advisory services for energy projects. With GIBB Power, EDF wishes to take part to key projects supporting South Africa's energy transition.

GIBB Power has the skilled teams required for handling high level engineering projects (Project feasibility Studies, Design services, Owner’s Engineer Services…).

Energy efficiency: new business line for EDF in South Africa

EDF has been active for many years in energy efficiency activities through its subsidiary Dalkia in Europe. Today, EDF is proud to bring its knowledge in South Africa by launching a pilot project with Leroy Merlin in Johannesburg.

In 2022, EDF started a pilot of energy efficiency services contract with the French retailer Leroy Merlin on four stores. This Energy Performance Saving Center project, known as DESC project, aims to test South African market appetite for energy efficiency solutions, using an smart and digital tools to assess customers' energy performances. Meters are installed onsite and digitally connected to a software that will capture energy consumption data per site. The data are thereafter monitored and analyzed by EDF local team to find ways to create energy savings.

Doing so, EDF wished to assess how to better serve the local market needs to develop green, economical and efficient energy systems.

AS EDF South Africa, we are proud to have set up an Energy Savings Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa!
